They were slaveholders and brought their slaves with them to Knox Co., TN where land books show they bought land. Four of Robert and Elizabeth's children were married in Knox Co. TN. "Land entries for Randolph Co., IN list Robert entering 90 acres in Section 10 and 80 acres in Section 11, T18N, R12E on November 26, 1831. Prior to Robert and Elizabeth coming to Indiana their son James and wife Sarah (Thornburg) Lumpkin had settled near Richmond about 1818 and then later moved to Perry Twp., Wayne Co. "Robert and Elizabeth Lumpkin migrated to Randolph Co at ages 75 and 65 where it was unsettled and uncleared and maintained their home and participated in the early church. "Elizabeth was received by letter into the Nettle Creek Regular Baptist Church on Sept 2, Saturday 1833. Robert Lumpkin was received by experience as a member on November 2, Saturday 1833. Several of their family were also on the early church membership list." p 568. !BIRTHPLACE: "Robert H. Lumpkin," Past and Present of Randolph County, Indiana, 1914, p1217. "...born in Virginia, from which state he moved to Tennessee in 1799, with his wife, who was Elizabeth Forrest, prior to her marriage. The Lumpkins were of Scotch descent, and the Forrests of Welsh extraction." Moved in 1818 near Economy, Wayne Co., IN.
