#5831 "Early settlers of Freneau."

"THE VAN PELT family of Monmouth County, has so far as the writer
knows, never been the subject of genealogical investigation and his own
notes are scanty and lacking in detail and connection. Moreover,
various children of the early Van Pelts, following a well-known Dutch
custom, adopted their father's Christian names as their own surnames.
Hence in tracing back a Hendrickson, Gysbetson, Laen (Lane), Tysen
(Tice), Petersen and others, we are quite likely to find a Van Pelt
progenitor. The early records of this family are to be found at New
Utrecht, Gowanus, and Flatbush, Long Island and Staten Island.
"Gysbert and Jacob Thys Lanen Van Pelt came from Holland at an
early date.
"Teuntje Thyse Laen Van Pelt came to America with her father,
and settled at New Utrecht. She married (about 1695) Jan Janse Van
Dyke
of Brooklyn. Their daughter, Catherine Van Dyke, married Daniel
Hendrickson of Brooklyn. The Hendricksons removed to Monmouth County,
NJ, where Daniel died January, 1728. This family is still numerous and
prominent in this county.
"Gysbert (Gilbert) Lanen Van Pelt, brother of the above
Teuntje, married Jannetje Adrianse Lambertson and removed to Monmouth
County, NJ, where they were members of the Brick Church (Bradvelt) in
1709. Their daughter Williampe, baptized September 18, 1679, married
William Hendricks, who died in 1711. Another daughter, Moika, married
Stoffel Derrickse Longstreet of Flatbush. He (Gysbert) died @ 1725.
He wrote his name 'Laen,' by which name, or Lane, his descendants are
known. He had a brother who was known as Peter Tysen and his
descendants are numerous under the names Tice and Tysen. John and
Derrick Tysen of Monmouth County were, perhaps, his brothers.
"Teunis Van Pelt of Gowanus, Brooklyn, lived in Monmouth County
for a short time early in the eighteenth century. Several of his
children are said to have married into the Hyer family.
"Squire' John P. Van Pelt married Ida________.
"Their son, Peter Van Pelt, married Deborah Carhart and had at
least one son.
"John P. Van Pelt, who married Ellen Carman was the father of:
"Peter Van Pelt (born@1835), who married twice and had: Frank,
Clement, Minnie and Peter.

[NOTE: The following appears directly under the above entry as if they
were also children of the preceding entry. However; as I type, the
dates would seem to belie this. This author often lists just names of
people of that surname in the community who he has identified, but
cannot connect, and I believe that is what he is doing here. I would
consider the following in that context until proven otherwise.]

"John B. Van Pelt, married Ida_____, and had at least one son,
John F., who died July 18, 1847, and is buried in the cemetery at
Freneau.
"Ida Van Pelt, born February 14, 1813, married John Bennett of
near Matawan.
"Mary Jane Van Pelt, born 1845, married Asbury Tice of near
Freneau.
"Mary A. Van Pelt, born 1808, married Joel Carlhart [volunteer:
Carhart?]of near Matawan.
"John Van Pelt was a merchant, who lived near Matawan in 1809,
in which year he was a subscriber to 'The Poems of Philip Freneau.'
"Geertruy Van Pelt married Gysbert (Gilbert) Sutphen, and had a
son, Aert Sutphen, who married Janet Van Mater, born Oct. 27, 1724.
"Serving in the Revolution from Monmouth County were:
Alexander, Christopher, Hendrick, Jacob, Johannes, Tunis, and William
Van Pelt.
"Buried in the cemetery at Freneau are:
"William Van Pelt, died March 28, 1839, ae. 76-1-28
"Elizabeth, his wife, died May 5, 1851, in seventy-seventh year
"John S., their son, died July 4, 1832, ae 13-4-?
"Christopher S. Van Pelt, died October 15, 1846, in his sixty-
sixth year.
"David Van Pelt, died September 13, 1808, ae 24-5-10
"David Van Pelt, died January 29, 1853, in his seventieth year.
"Thomas Van Pelt, died October 26, 1844, in his forty-ninth year.
