• Biography: Delaware County, IN. ³As to the first settler in Monroe Twp. Del Co IN, there can be not doubt. It was Jonathan Mills who came with his family from Wayne county to Monroe Twp. in the fall of 1821. .....Mr. Mills seems to have been a perfect type of the woodsman and hunter, never clearing more land than was needed for raising grain and vegetables for home consumption, depending on the chase for his exchangeable commodities. It is said of him that whenever he could hear a neighborıs chickens crow, the neighborhood was too crowded for him, and he at once broke camp and went in search of more retired territory. He remained in Monroe Twp only a few years (about 1830) when he moved on westward, locating near Anderson. Mr. Mills never entered land in Monroe Township, but remained only until the settlers began to get thick and the game scarce.²

³The first white resident of what is now Monroe township is said to have been Jonathan Mills, a Tennessean, who come over into Indiana from Greene County, OH, and had gradually pushed westward, hunting and trapping, until he was found here, a squatter, in 1821. Two or three years later he was joined here by his kinsmen, the three Gibson brothers
