Reverend Richard Roy Tullis
The Reverend Richard Roy Tullis of 15 Wooster Street NW, Navarre, OH peacefully passed from this life on the evening of July 28, 2005, following a courageous battle with cancer. His wish had been to die in the comfort of his home, and with the compassionate assistance of family members, Hospice of Stark County, and the members of the congregation of St. Paul UCC in Navarre, he was able to do so. He was most grateful for the love and care extended to him by family members, the people of St. Paul's Church and friends. He will be missed by the many people whose lives he touched through his teaching, preaching, and stories.

Dick Tullis was born on November 7, 1933, in Shelby, OH, the oldest son of Roy F. and Mildred (Mellick) Tullis. He was raised on the family's goat dairy farm and learned most of life's valuable lessons right there and in the community of Shelby, where he worked as a teenager. He was a graduate of Shelby High School (1951), Miami University of Ohio (1955) and Bangor Theological Seminary (1987). He was a veteran, serving as a pilot in the U.S. Air Force from 1955-61, retiring as Captain in 1970. He was a businessman in Chicago for 20 years, working for the Inland Steel Co and Pre-Finished Metals Co., respectively. He owned and operated his own greenhouse/landscaping business back in Shelby, OH in the 1980's, called "The Greenhouse," which consisted of 7 greenhouses and local landscaping contracts. From 1987-98, he was the Pastor of the yoked parish of the First Congregational Church UCC in Russell, KS and the Gorham Community Church UCC in Gorham, KS. He retired from the ministry at the age of 65, settling at the Tower Lakes Gated Community in Lake Wales, FL.

On November 10, 2002, he was married to the Rev. Elaine Haskell Tobak, in Maine. In September 2004, she was called to be the Pastor of the St. Paul UCC in Navarre, OH, which is where they lived at the time of his death.

He was predeceased by his parents, and by his wife of 24 years, in 1995, the late Carol (Raymond) Tullis.

In addition to his wife, Rev. Elaine Tullis, Rev. Tullis is survived by his daughter Lynn E. Force and her husband, Jeremy Force; and their five children, Megan, Nicholas, Hollie, Aren, and Ayden Force; his three sons, John, Bruce, and Philip Tullis; and three grandchildren, David, Mary Sarah, and Corporal Philip Tullis USMC (serving in Iraq); his sister, MaryLee Gibson and brother-in-law, Bill; his brother Dr. David Tullis and sister-in-law, Kim; his step-sister Janet Brown; two step-daughters, Virginia (Ginny) Coleman and Erin Shaw; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A Service of Remembrance will be held at St. Paul UCC, 21 Wooster St NW, in Navarre on Sunday, August 14, 2005 at 7:30 PM, with Mr. Lorin Cope, Minister of Conference Relations, UCC National Office, Cleveland, OH officiating. A Reception to greet the family will immediately follow the ceremony. In lieu of flowers, gifts in memory of Rev. Richard Tullis can be sent to: St. Paul UCC, 21 Wooster St NW, Navarre, OH 44662 or to Hospice of Stark County (also sent to the St. Paul UCC address).
