• Reference: Education of Women at the Cherokee Female Seminary. Wilson was born 3 December 1842, in Washington County, Arkansas, the daugther of Thaddeus C. Wilson III, a Mississippi steamboat captain, and Eliza Jane McKisic. Because her parents died when she was two years old, Florence and her brother, Montogmery, were taken to Evansville, Arkansas [Vineyard Township, Washington County, AR], to be raised by their aunt and uncle. That couple died a few years laters, and Florence moved into the historic White McClellan mainsion at Cane Hill, Arkansas, with family friends.

She began her form education at Cane Hill Female Seminary in Arkansas, a school founded by a Mount Holyoke graduate, Laura Graham. In 1858, at the age of sixteen, Wilson graduated with honors from La Grange Female College near Jackson, Tennessee.
