In June of 1853 [...]
The following month Erik T. Lien came into the valley from Boone County, Iowa and claimed land just north of the Root River bridge midway Rushford and Peterson on the farm now owned by Marvin and Robert Brand. At this time Peter Peterson Haslerud [Erik's first cousin] claimed land which later became the townsite bearing his name, while Hellick Gliem claimed the Robert Highum farm and Even Reishus selected the present Isberg farm as his new home.

In July, 1853 Erick T. Lien came to the Root River Valley from Boone County, Iowa with three yoke of oxen and procured a claim in Sections 16 & 21 on the farm now owned by Robert and Marvin Brand, near the Root River Bridge. Oliver Wilson accompanied him driving a span of oxen for him. Oliver was a lad of seventeen and too young to pre-empt land so he returned to Iowa and hired out as a farm hand until 1856 when he returned to the valley and purchased 160 acres in Section 20. He later acquired more land and a great deal of this worlds goods and retired a wealthy man.

Jurie Lien was born on her fathers farm in October, 1853, being the first white child born in the valley and probably the first in Fillmore County. However, she died at the age of eight years and was buried on the Styrk Isberg farm (probably in the old section of the Lutheran Cemetery).

Early Settlers. The Root river valley was the first part of the town to be settled, the pioneers being Norwegian, who came directly from Wisconsin by way of McGregor and Decorah, Iowa, with ox teams. The first came in 1853, and were Ole Olson Tuff and Halver Goodrich. Mrs. Tuff took a claim in sections twenty-sic, twenty-three, and twenty-seven. It is south of the river and southwest of South Rushford. [...] In the same month of July came Erick T. Lien, who drove in with three yoke of oxen and procured a farm in sections sixteen and twenty-one. [...]
