PETERSON, Minn. n Arne H. Boyum, 70, of Peterson died Tuesday, May 12, 2009, at Rochester Methodist Hospital in Rochester, Minn.

Arne was born Oct. 2, 1938, in Rushford, Minn., to John and Gertrude Boyum. He was raised in rural Peterson and graduated from Peterson High School. Arne received bachelor of science degrees in philosophy and history from Augsburg College in Minneapolis. Arne also was selected to attended Oslo University in Oslo, Norway, through the Student Ambassador Program.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1961 to 1964. While in the military, Arne worked for the Department of Defense Intelligence, serving in Ethiopia for 18 months. After the service, Arne moved to Peterson and worked for what is now known as SEMCAC in Rushford. Arne then worked for the Office of Economic Opportunity in St. Paul. He moved back to the Peterson area in 1976 to work on the farm with his brother Paul. On Dec. 17, 1994, Arne was united in marriage with Gail Barnard at Arendahl Lutheran Church.

Arne served on the Farmer's Elevator Board as a director. He was a member and treasurer of his beloved Arendahl Lutheran Church for several years. Arne wrote a book for the Arendahl Lutheran Church sesquicentennial celebration, which was a comprehensive history of the church. Arne was named after his great-grandfather, the Rev. Arne Boyumk, who was also the founder of the Arendahl Lutheran Church. Arne's favorite activities included carpentry, woodworking and travel to the Holy Land and Norway. He was a kind, gentle and caring man, who loved life and his family.

Arne is survived by his wife, Gail; one daughter, Jessica (Anthony) Scholfield of Menomonie, Wis.; three brothers, Marlow (Beverly) Boyum of Rushford, Donald Boyum of Peterson and Paul (Sharlyn) Boyum of Utica, Minn.; two sisters, Joyce Boyum of Minneapolis and Bertha Boyum of Peterson; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Mary Jane.

The funeral service for Arne will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 16, at Arendahl Lutheran Church in rural Peterson, with the Revs. Ron Warnes of Arendahl Lutheran Church and Peter Geisendorfer-Lindgren of Lord of Life Lutheran Church in Maple Grove, Minn., co-officiating. Burial will be in the Arendahl Lutheran Cemetery in rural Peterson.

Friends may call from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday at Hoff Funeral Homes-Rushford Chapel in Rushford, and one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the church.
