Jens Julsrud began the family tradition of merchandizing in 1876 when he went into partnership with Lars Lukkason in a general store on Jessie Street across from the Northwestern Hotel.

Jens Julsrud was born at Eidsvold, Norway on March 6, 1836. Growing into manhood he heard about the wonderful resources of the new world and took passage to this country in 1866, coming directly to Rushford. Shortly after his arrival, he became employed in the store of his countryman, John Iverson which was then located on the corner of Maple Street and Rushford Avenue in the old business district.
