Obituary, 1927. Herman Oliver Moen was born on the old Moen homestead in Arendahl township, February 28, 1869. He came to Peterson with his parents in May 1886. In the summer of the same year, he opened a furniture and hardware store which was the origin of the present Moen Mercantile company. The following year he opened a furniture store and a meat market at Fountain. He was married September 28, 1890 to Miss Mathida Wethe.
Later he entered into partnership with A.A. Ness, engaging in the grain and stock buying business, operating elevators at Peterson, Whalan, Lanesboro, Spring Valley and other places, moving back to Peterson. In 1897 he moved to Dexter, where he engaged in the furniture business for a while. Then he moved to Spring Valley where he was at the head of a casket company from 1898 until 1901 when he returned to Peterson and for a few years was associated with his brother, O. A. O. Moen, in the present Moen Mercantile company's establishment. For nine years he was employed as a traveling salesman for the Empire Cream Separator company, and in 1910 he located a homestead in South Dakota. remaining there for three years. In 1913, he went on the road for the Perfection Milking Machine company, being sent to Calgary, Alberta, as manager of the Canadian branch of the company. When Great Britain became involved in the war, he returned to the States, moving his family to La Crosse, he continued traveling for the same company, taking care of the Wisconsin territory. In 1921 he was sent to Syracuse, NY as eastern manager for the Perfection company, moving back to La Crosse. Early in 1925, he bagan work for his brother, C.R. Moen of La Crosse continuing there until the time of his death, which occurred in April 1927. He was 58 years, one month and 27 days old. Besides his wife, he is survived by 8 children, Mrs. Clara Wolrath, Dempster, ND; Mrs. Mollie Frankson, Spring Valley; Mrs. Julia Taroldson, Mpls; Clarence Moen, Munice, Indiana; Archie Moen, Madison, Wis.; Henry Moen, Palm Beach, Fla; Gerhard, Munice, Ind; Ernest, Mpls.
While the late Mr. Moen was a resident of Peterson he helped to organize Our Savior's Lutheran Church. During his residence in La Crosse he was a member of the Rev. Braa's congregation, and was treasurer of that organization at the time of his death.
Herman married Mathilda J. WETHE, daughter of Johan Gunderson WETHE and Maren Christine Olsdatter HOGARDEN, on 28 Sep 1890 in Peterson, Fillmore County, MN.1 (Mathilda J. WETHE was born in May 1870 in MN and died Betw 1920-1942.)
