FOX LAKE - Leonard "Butch" Bending, 61, a Fox Lake-area resident for many years and a former resident of Des Plaines, died Saturday, Sept. 24, 2005, at Northern Illinois Medical Center in McHenry.
He was born July 1, 1944, in Des Plaines, to Harry and Florence (Carlson) Bending.
He graduated from Maine West High School in Des Plaines as a member of the class of 1962. While attending Maine West, he played quarterback on the football team and was the catcher on the baseball team. He went on to play college football at the University of Illinois and then at Illinois College in Jacksonville, graduating with the class of 1966. He earned his master's degree in education from the University of Illinois.
He began his career as a teacher and coach at John Hersey High School in Arlington Heights, where he coached football, gymnastics and baseball for many years. He coached several state-championship teams and athletes. He rounded out his career as an educator at Round Lake High School and McHenry High School, where he served as assistant principal.
Survivors include two sons, Brett (Sarah) Bending of Lake Havasu, Ariz., and Bart Bending of Fox Lake; a daughter, Sara (Pete) Hannigan of Wauconda; a grandson, Harrison Bending; a dear companion, Pam Pettit; and aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and a host of friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
The visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 27, at K.K. Hamsher Funeral Home, 12 N. Pistakee Road, Fox Lake. The service will be at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 28, at the funeral home. The Rev. Lisle J. Kauffman will officiate.
Interment will be in Ridgewood Cemetery in Des Plaines.
In lieu of flowers, memorials would be appreciated to the Des Plaines Police Department Youth Program, 1420 Miner St., Des Plaines, IL 60016.
