Henry's parents were Lars Endresson and Aase Olavsdotter Hauge. They lived on a farm near Haugesund, Norway. In America, Lars used the name of Henry Lars Hauge. At the age of seventeen, Henry attended the teachers college in Stordal, Norway where he remained until he was nineteen when he entered the seminary in the same town. Later, Henry went to sea as a sailor and he traveled to England, the West Indies, France, Norway, Finland; and then back to Haugesund, Norway. In 1886 Henry came to America, landing in New York City and then coming directly to Rushford, Minnesota.
Henry had been a sailor in Norway and he was a small wiry man. There is a story that when Henry was well along in age, there was a celebration in Rushford, Minnesota. One of the events was a rope climbing contest. After all the young men of the community had had their turn, and they were barely able to get to the top of the rope if at all, Henry showed them how. He climbed the rope, hand over hand, in record time and then, to show off some more, came down the rope head first.
Sarah Ann Richardson was born at Choice and received an elementary education at the Choice school. After completing her education, Sarah worked for families in and around Winona and Rushford. On Feb. 22,1889, Sarah Ann Richardson was married to Henry Hauge by the Reverend B. E. Olin in the Choice Methodist Church. Sarah and Henry then homesteaded near Woonsocket, Sanborn Co., South Dakota and their first two children, Alice and Lawrence, were born in South Dakota. In 1893 the family moved back to Minnesota in a covered wagon. The terrible draught that lasted for several years in South Dakota drove them back. Sarah and Henry then bought the north part of the original Ole Richardson farm from Ole and farmed there until they retired to Rushford in 1944. When Martha Helen (Richardson) Larson died in 1916, Sarah and Henry fostered Sarah's niece, Verna (Larson) Burreson as she would her own child until Verna was about ten years old.
