Wentzel, born in Christiana, Norway in 1831, came to the United States in 1853, located at Owatonna, MN and worked as a blacksmith until the Civil War broke out. After serving in the Army for two years he returned to Minnesota for a time, met and married Caroline Sundby, and then decided to come to Dickey County, Dakota Territory, where they homesteaded and where they built a shack. The first winter was rough and the only fuel they had was buffalo chips and slough grass. They had very little food and had to walk four miles to the nearest neighbor to get milk for the family. They had six children. Matilda married Os Thompson and moved East. Herman and Carl never married. William married Clara Titus and farmed NorthEast of Ellendale until the Twenties when they moved to the state of Washington. Carl, Herman and Chris played piano and violin for many dances and Chris had his violin at the Holte Furniture Store in Ellendale for repairs when the big fire burned several blocks in 1916. Chris married Lucy Etta Mae Bresaw on December 2, 1900 and after Ole died they made their home on the old Wentzel farm with Caroline. Chris built a new farm about a mile away in the winter of 1907-1908, moved to another farm near Guelph in 1932, and retired from farming in 1940, moving to St. Paul, MN, where Chris passed away in 1951 and Lucy in 1955. Chris and Lucy had nine children. Uneeta was born in 1902 and died in 1916. Vivian, born in 1904, married Roy Waite in 1934. They farmed in the Guelph area for several years before moving to Anaheim, CA, where Roy died in 1975. Lelah, born in 1905, worked for the State of Minnesota in St. Paul from 1926 to 1940, moved to San Francisco and married Rudy Carlson. In 1950 they moved to Denver, CO where she died in 1976 and Rudy in 1980. Olive, born in 1907, married Syrus Nordahl of Monango and the had one daughter, Donna Marie Nordahl. In 1947 she married Roy Gruetzman and they had one daughter, Susan Debra Gruetzman. Nona, born in 1909, joined the WAVES in 1941, married Edward Garrett in 1945. Ed was a geologist and worked in Egypt, Thailand, Guatamela, and the Panama Canal as well as the United States. He retired in 1975 and they lived in Vicksburg, MS, where he had worked at the U.S. Waterways Project. They had three daughters: Toni Blair of Santa Cruz, CA; Daryl Lynn of Oregon; and Nona Jr., an airline hostess of Denver, CO., Nona passed away in 1981. Monica, born in 1910, lived in the Los Angeles area, Reno, NV, St. Paul, MN, Sacramento, CA and Sleepy eye, MN. She married Albert Hoppe of Sleepy Eye in 1949. When Albert retired in 1974 they returned to Sleepy Eye where he died in 1981. Their daughter, LaMonne, lives in Sleepy Eye and their son, Scott, lives in Auburn, CA. Wayne, born in 1914, worked in the Los Angeles area for a time, returning to North Dakota in 1936. He married Inga Barsten on November 16, 1940 and they stayed on the Chris Wentzel farm until 1943, moving then to Maddock farm and to the Roy Waite farm. In 1948 they moved to a ranch near Castle Rock, CO, then built a home near Franktown, CO. Wayne was in the construction business until he quit in 1973 due to poor health. They still live near Franktown. Their son, Lyle, works for United Air Lines at Stapelton Airport, Denver, CO. Their son, Merlyn, was killed in Vietnam where he was an army helicopter pilot. Wayne and Inga keep busy in church work and are members in Full Gospel Businessmen's Fellowship. Evelyn was born in 1918 and died in 1926. Gordon, born in 1920, worked in the shipyards in San Francisco in the 40's then returned to North Dakota and worked with Wayne on the Roy Waite farm. He was married in 1948 and moved to a farm north of Oakes. In 1957 he moved to Anaheim, CA, where his is still a mailman. He married again, but his wife passed away in 1975. His son, Curtis, was killed while working in a logging camp in the State of Washington in 1978, at the age of 30. His daughter, Valerie, is married and has two boys.
