Among the substantial farmers of Chippewa county is John Bjerke [son], who owns one hundred and twenty acres of land, forty of which have been cleared while the remainder is used for pasture. A native of Norway, he was born four miles north of Christiania, January 24, 1862, and is a son of Ole and Mary (Engelson) Bjerke, both natives of Norway. The father came to the United States in 1863, settling in Fillmore county, Minnesota, where he engaged in farming on rented land. Ten years later [1873] he came to Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, find employment as a lumber jack. Five years later [1878] he moved to township 31, range 5, [section 23] and after working in the woods for a few years purchased one hundred and sixty acres of unbroken land covered with pine timber. There he built a home and lived until his death in 1905. His wife also passed away on the old homestead. In religious faith there were Lutherans. Their family numbered three sons: Gustav Peterson, who now lived on the old homestead nad uses the name of Peterson as it was the family name with the parents came to America, the father, however, adopted the Norwegian farm name for himself and his other children; Charles, who also live on a farm in this township; and John, our subject.

• Reference: Pioneer Norwegian Log Home, Irvine Park: Chippewa County, Minnesota, USA. This log house, constructed of hand-hewn White Pine logs was built by Norwegian immigrant Ole Pederson Bjerke about 1881. Ole and his wife Mari had three sons: Gus, John, and Charles.

Around 1880, Ole had applied for a Homestead in the Chippewa County township of Colburn, nine miles east of Cornell. The log home was built at that site and lived in by Ole and Mari until their deaths in 1905 and 1908. Their descendants occupied it until 1953.

In February of 1979 the Clement Bayerl family, a great-grandson of Ole Bjerke, donated the log home to the Chippewa County Historical Society. It was moved to this site by the Mitchell House Moving Company and restored to pioneer standards by Mike Young. The Chippewa County Historical Society furnished the log home and in 1987 donated it to the City of Chippewa Falls for Irvine Park.
