• Notes: Preble Township notes. In 1865 the family was living on the husmann farm Vitsøøren under the farm Vitsø in Hemne parish west of Trondheim, Norway. They came to America in 1869 and first lived near Newburg. In the 1870 census they were in Newburg Twp.. According to oral Vitse family tradition, Justin died in the "Irish Valley" the first winter that they lived there. The house site of the dugout where they, or possibly Christian, first lived is across the dry run to the south of the house on P10-3. Justin's wife, Maret, had to get some Irish farmers to help bury Justin. Marit later married Hans O. Hanson and may have then moved to the Irish Valley. Hans O. Hanson's farm was P14-1, later owned by John Vitse.
