Birth Notes: mistranscribed as "Tosten" Christening Notes: #30, p18, 1820 Noted events in his life were: • Immigration: from Norway, 1869, America. leaving Hemne 24 Apr 1869... • Notes: Preble Township notes. In 1865 the family was living on the husmann farm Vitsøøren under the farm Vitsø in Hemne parish west of Trondheim, Norway. They came to America in 1869 and first lived near Newburg. In the 1870 census they were in Newburg Twp.. According to oral Vitse family tradition, Justin died in the "Irish Valley" the first winter that they lived there. The house site of the dugout where they, or possibly Christian, first lived is across the dry run to the south of the house on P10-3. Justin's wife, Maret, had to get some Irish farmers to help bury Justin. Marit later married Hans O. Hanson and may have then moved to the Irish Valley. Hans O. Hanson's farm was P14-1, later owned by John Vitse. Jøsten married Marit Mortensdatter SKOGRAND, daughter of Morten Olsen SKOGRAND and Bereth Torgiersdatter, on 18 Jul 1848 in Hemne, Sør-Trøndelag, Norway. (Marit Mortensdatter SKOGRAND was born on 30 Jun 1828 in Hemne, Sør-Trøndelag, Norway, baptized on 30 Jun 1828 in Hemne, Sør-Trøndelag, Norway and died on 7 Nov 1907 in America.) |
