East Grand Forks Hunter Shot by Accident Norman Hellerud Instantly Killed by Accidental Discharge Of Gun --- On His Farm Near Ada Tuesday Afternoon -- Was Out Hunting Prairie Chickens -- Had Loaded Gun in Wagon -- Attempted to Draw It Out by the Barrel , When the Weapon was Discharged, Blowing His Head Off. --- Norman Hellerud was accidentally shot and instantly killed late Tuesday afternoon on his father's farm, mid-way between Ada and Halstad. He with William Shields, Peter Melberg and a driver left Ada Tuesday morning to hung in the vicinity of Hellerud's old home and had a very successful day and were about ready to drive home when the dog came to a point. Hellerud reached down and grabbed the barrel of his gun, when there was a flash and the top of his head was neatly blown off by the discharge, it entered under his chin and coming out at his temple, causing instant death. His father, Andrew J. Hellerud, and brother, who were working the field near by, took charge of the remains and had them moved to the house where the boy was born.
Norman Hellerud was 22 years old and a son of one of the prominent family of Norman county. His father has recently retired from the farm and is residing at Halstad, but together with another son happened to be at the farm that day and was talking with Norman only a few minutes before the horrible accident happened. The young man has lately been staying at Ada, where he is connected with one of the dray lines. He was very popular with all his acquaintances, and his sudden taking off has saddened the entire community. The interment will take place at Halstad.
