Mason, Monte A. age 95, Chanhassen, MN, left us on October 12, 2012, at St. Joseph's Hospital in St. Paul as a result of a stroke he suffered a few days prior to his death. Betty, his wife of 72 years, and his children were with him. Monte was born on January 23, 1917 in Fertile, MN, to Gina (Dahl) and James D. Mason. In 1941 he married Betty, the love of his life. Together they have three children. A 1940 graduate of Macalester College in St. Paul, Monte's professional career in the publishing/ printing business included owning and operating (with his wife, Betty) the Monticello Times. His journalism career began at the age of 19 when he became the youngest newspaper editor in Minnesota after taking over the operation of the Fertile Journal upon the death of his father and concluded with a number of years as a highly successful salesman at Webb Publishing Co. in St. Paul. Monte served in the US Army- Air Force during World War II <http://www.legacy.com/memorial-sites/ww2/?personid=160454209&affiliateID=940> and was recalled to active duty during the Korean War <http://www.legacy.com/memorial-sites/korean-war/?personid=160454209&affiliateID=940>. Monte is survived by his loving wife Betty (Mildred Elizabeth); children, Michael (Nancy) Mason, Chanhassen; Monte M. Mason (Minneapolis); Merry (Rodger) Whipple, Neenah, WI; and grandchildren Emily Mason and Scott Mason, Chicago, IL, Tom Whipple, San Mateo, CA, and Anne Whipple, Kilkenny, Ireland; as well as by several nieces, a nephew, and many grand-nieces and -nephews. Monte was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings and siblings- in-law: Milton (Marion) Mason; Mona (Douglas) Holzinger; Rance (Bertha) Mason; Merna (Steve) Niblack; and Marne (Mildred) Mason. The family wishes to express its deep thanks and appreciation to the fifth floor staff of St. Joseph's Hospital for the loving care they provided to the entire Monte A. Mason family. A service celebrating Monte's life will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, October 16 at Excelsior United Methodist Church, 881 3rd Avenue, Excelsior, MN 55331; the Rev. Kent Johnson officiating. Visitation from 1 p.m. until the service. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Monte's memory may be made to Habitat for Humanity or the Minnesota Nature Conservancy. Monte married Living |
