Brotherhood Erects Monument Marking 1st Rights in Preble
MABEL, Minn. (Special) - A monument constructed of native materials commemorating the first public meeting place where worship services where conducted by Preble Township Lutherans has been erected by the Men's Brotherhood of Scheie Lutheran Church.
The monument marks the location of a schoolhouse in the "Chicken Town" area, six miles northwest of here which once served as a temporary church.
The monument consists of an up right limestone shaft once used as a hitching post on the old Dayton farm, now occupied by the James Ellestads. The date 1879 is carved in the stone. Overall height of the monument is about 5 feet. The brotherhood plans to mount a plaque on the shaft giving pertinent data.
The earliest settlers arrived in the area in 1853 and a congregation was organized in 1857. Services were first held in homes, but later a schoolhouse built for District 11 became the temporary church. This was in use until a permanent church was constructed at the site of the present church. A Depression in the ground may still be seen at the schoolhouse site, indicating the basement which was used before the rest of the log structure was completed.
Since the water supply problem caused pioneers to build their first dwellings along the rivers, the valley today known as "Chicken Town" became a settlement shortly after the middle of the last century. Three mills were constructed in the valley, the first in 1857, to utilize water power. These became known as the Halls mill [Thomas G. Hall], the Severson mill [Ole Severson], and the Nessa mill and were in use until the turn of the century. It was here early farmers brought their wheat for grinding.
A millstone from one of those mills, made of native stone, was found by one of the Scheie brotherhood members and now serves as the base for the monument. Other stones found at the location and cement were added to complete the foundation.
The Winona Daily News Friday, May 17, 1957 Page: 14 [...] Pioneer members of the Scheie Lutheran Church worshipped in a log structure which also doubled as a schoolhouse. In 1953 the Scheie Brotherhood erected a monument at the location.
Base of the monuments is a millstone from the Severson Mill [...]
