Helen was born at her farm home in Houston County on Aug. 30, 1918, to Nick and Ida (Thorson) Overby. Helen attended Baker School in Ferndale through eighth grade and then Rushford High School through ninth grade. Helen was married to Clarence Rustad on Dec. 15, 1938, at the Rushford Lutheran Parsonage. They lived on the Rustad farm until 1948 and then purchased their own farm. Thirty years later, they moved to Rushford and owned and operated Rustad Hog Equipment. Once the joys of retirement started, they took full advantage and started traveling. They made two trips to Norway and visited distant relatives, a trip to London to visit friends and good old-fashion vacations to Arizona, Texas, Branson and even Las Vegas. In her later years, Helen stayed active in the community through the women's groups at Highland Prairie Church. She enjoyed quilting, embroidering, cooking and volunteering at SEMCAC.
Helen is survived by her three children, Curtis (Carol) Rustad, of Spring Grove, Maynard (Sharon) Rustad, of Rushford, and Judy (Ken) Klennert, of Rochester; six grandchildren, Mia (Mike), Angela (Jim), Chanel, Brandon, Sara, and Stacy (Jeffrey); five great-grandchildren, Maggie, Mason, Noah, Siri and Maddi; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband of 64 years, Clarence, in 2003; sisters, Ella James and Edna Rustad; and brothers, Carl Overby and Arvin Overby.
A gathering of family and friends will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, March 17, 2014, at Hoff Funeral and Cremation Service in Rushford. Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 18, at Highland Prairie Lutheran Church, with visitation one hour prior. The Rev. Dan Watland will be officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
