• Obituary, 2007. MABEL -- Allen E. Johnson, 79, of rural Mabel, died Monday, June 25, 2007, at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Home in Rushford.
He was born July 28, 1927, in Preble Township, Fillmore County, Minn., to Selmer and Hannah (Hilden) Johnson. He attended school in Choice and then from October 1946 to March 1948 he served in the United States Army.
On February 9, 1952, he married Eunice L. Nerstad at the Scheie Lutheran Church in rural Mabel. She died February 5, 2005.
They lived near Bratsberg for five years before returning to Mr. Johnson's home farm in Preble Township, Fillmore County, where he lived and farmed until October 2006, when he became a resident of the Good Shepherd Lutheran Home in Rushford.
He was a member of the Scheie Lutheran Church, the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He had also previously served for 22 years on the Preble Township Board. He enjoyed his grandchildren, playing cards, golf and dartball.
He is survived by two daughters, Kailyn (Dan) DeFrang of St. Charles and Kathleen Matz of Rochester; a daughter-in-law, Elaine of Mabel; eight grandchildren, Travis Winters of Rochester, Tiffany Winters of Janesville, Wis., Nicholas DeFrang of Rochester, Lori Matz of Byron, Sarah Matz of Rochester, Nicole Johnson of River Falls, Wis. and Jacob and Chelsey Johnson, both of Mabel; two great-grandchildren, Jacob Anderson-Defrang of Rochester and Haley Ullius of Janesville; and one great-grandchild, soon to arrive Brayden David Ullius; and a sister, Charlotte (Jim) Silfka of Medford, Minn.
He was preceded in death by a son, David; two brothers, Harland and Laverne; and a sister, Stella Tudahl.
Funeral services were held on Friday at the Scheie Lutheran Church in rural Mabel with the Rev. Mary Waudby officiating.
Burial was in the Choice Cemetery with military rites by the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Mengis Funeral Home in Mabel assisted the family with arrangements.
Allen married Eunice Loretta NERSTAD, daughter of Edwin NERSTAD and Sophia LARSON, on 9 Feb 1952 in Fillmore County, Minnesota, USA.1 (Eunice Loretta NERSTAD was born on 13 Apr 1932 in Houston County, Minnesota, USA and died on 5 Feb 2005.)
