Pioneer Lady Passes Away
Funeral services were held from the Hettinger Lutheran Church Saturday, Oct. 5 at 2:30 p.m. for Mrs. Bertha Larson, pioneer resident of this area, who passed away following a stroke last Wednesday, Oct 1 at the age of 78 years.
Bertha Marie Valeby was born in Oslo, Norway, March 25, 1869, the daughter of John and Marie Valeby.
At the age of nine she came with her parents to Peterson, MN. Later she was united in marriage there with the late Lewis F. Larson.
She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and was a faithful member of the Hettinger Lutheran Church during her residence here.
Surviving her are five children, Julia Mundahl, Peterson, MN; Gladys Otos, Vancouver, WA, Blanche Johnson, Clayton Larson, and Harry Larson, all of Bucyrus. One son Monroe preceded her in death. One Stepson, Fred A. Larson, Cumberland, MD also survives as do 28 grandchildren, two great grand children and two brothers, Chris Johnson, Spring Valley, Mn and Carl Johnson, Peterson, MN
Mrs. Larson came to North Dakota in the fall of 1906 with her husband and family and has made her home here since with the exception of three years spent at Anoka, MN.
Rev. Karl Xavier officiated at the services at the church. Appropriate songs were sung as duets by Mrs. Carl Austad and Mrs. Ernest Stedje. Pallbearers were A. O. Brown, Will Evenson, M. P. Quickstad, Ed Arnold, E.M. Ruud, and P. N. Stedje. Interment was made in the Hettinger cemetery.
Bertha married Solomon PAQUETTE, son of Moses PAQUETTE and Madeline LA RIVIERE, on 11 Nov 1895 in La Crosse County, WI.1 (Solomon PAQUETTE was born on 16 Mar 1864 in Columbia County, WI 3 and died on 28 Oct 1910 in Stark County, ND.) The cause of his death was appendicitis.
Bertha next married Lars F. LARSON, son of Find Larsen LERUM and Anna Olsdatter HAVREBERG, in 1898. (Lars F. LARSON was born on 20 Jan 1861 in Fillmore County, MN 4, baptized in Arendahl and died on 22 Dec 1936 in Adams County, ND 2.)
