After high school, he traveled with various bands. When he got married, George and Selma first lived in Lafayette, MN (Nicollet County) for a couple a years before settling in Rushford, MN (Fillmore County).

George played the trombone with various bands including the Peterson Band (Peterson, MN), the Lafayette Band (Lafayette, MN), the Barnum & Bailey Band, and the Lester Harris Orchestra (Adolphus Hotel, Dallas TX, et. al.). After he married and settled in Rushford, he helped at the school teaching various instruments. The banjo was likely his second favorite instrument.

Art Bakken and his crew are set-ting up a new building for George Haslerud on the lot just east of the Northwestern Hotel. It will be ready for George to move his barbershop there June 15.

Died Very Suddenly

Relatives, friends and the entire community were very shocked and saddened last Saturday when word was received that George Haslerud had passed away Friday evening, following a very serious stroke. Few in the community knew that George was in very poor physical condition, at least to such an extent that his death was imminent, and thus his sudden death was such a shock to everyone.

George first knew about his condition a few years ago, and at that time went to a hospital for examination. It was found that he was suffering from very high blood pressure. Care and a more leisurely life were about all that could be. done for him. This spring he felt his condition was getting worse, so in the early summer he underwent examination at Rochester, where the same diagnosis was given, but almost no medical treatment was available to help him. His physical, condition was such that he could not stand a major heart operation, which was the only possible means of overcoming his trouble. The doctors knew the end was near, and George himself knew that he had less than six months left of life in this world. However, he kept the sad news to himself and family, trying to appear cheerful, trying to continue working in his barber shop for short periods each day.

A few days before his death, he thought a few days of vacation and rest would be good for him. Thus he and his wife left with no destination in mind, just to get away. They were to spend Friday night in Slayton, Minn., and continue on to Lafayette the next morning, to visit old friends. While eating a picnic lunch in the Slayton park, prior to a band concert which George wanted to hear, he was taken violently ill. A doctor was called immediately and diagnosed it as a very serious stroke. Taken to the hospital, everything possible was done for him, but he failed to rally from a coma into which he had passed, and death came about two hours later.

George Haslerud, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Haslerud, was born March 4, 1901, at Albert Lea, Minn. He was only fifty years old at the time of his death. On June 12, 1928, he was united in marriage to Selma Olness at Peterson. Following the marriage, he and his wife moved to Lafayette, Minn., where for three years he operated a barbershop. He then came to Rushford to open a barbershop and he and his family have lived here ever since. A member of the Rushford Lutheran Church, he has always been active in church affairs.

He is survived by his wife; one daughter, Yvonne; his mother, Mrs. Cora Haslerud of Peterson; one, brother, Robert, of Peterson, who worked in the barbershop; and numerous other relatives.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday of this week, at the home at 1:30 and at the Rushford Lutheran Church at 2:00 o'clock, with the Rev. N. L. Otterstad officiating. A quartet, composed of D. W. Koffron, Herbert Highum, Shelby Westby and Lyle Iverson sang 'Nearer My God To Thee' and 'Abide With Me'. Burial was made in the Lutheran cemetery. The pall bearers were Wm. Smaby, Norman Berg, Dr. R. W. Hammer, D. T. Rollefson, Wilton Klawitter and Roy Stephans.

Out of town relatives and friends who attended the services included 0 the following: Mrs. Alfred Clark and Mr. Milton Haslerud of Minneapolis; Mr. and Mrs. Morris Holstad of Northwood, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. Roy Blumenshein and family of Waseca; Mrs. Esther Duncan and Mrs. H. Rusch of Zumbro Falls; Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Bakken of Rochester; Mrs. Edith Hill and Mr. Arthur Hill of Albert Lea; and many from the nearby surrounding towns.

In closing this obituary, the writer cannot help but mention an outdoor friendship that has existed between the two for many years. George was a great lover of the outdoors, and the seasonal outdoors sports that followed the calendar each year. Fishing, hunting of all kinds, skiing, toboganning, these were the sports that George to loved, and in which he spent his spare time. During the last few years, when the rugged life of the outdoors became too difficult for him, and he was forced to slow down a bit, he turned to another hobby, that of painting pictures in oil. He became quite proficient in this hobby, and many beautiful outdoor scenes which he painted were on display in his barber shop.

To George Haslerud, a lover of the great out doors, his many hunting pals, including this writer, here by bid a fond farewell.

Rushford, Dies
On Vacation Trip

Funeral services will be held here Tuesday for George Haslerud, 50, veteran Rushford barber.

Mr. Haslerud died unexpectedly at Murray hospital in Slayton, Minn , Friday night. He had suffered a stroke while eating lunch with his wife at a park there a short time before. They had been on a vacation trip

Well-known in this area for his paintings as well as his profession, Mr. Haslerud had operated a barber shop in Rushford the past 20 years.

A number of years ago he took up painting in oil as a hobby and gained considerable reputation for his work.

His barber shop here served as a show room for his work. and the art display drew comment from strangers in town as well as Haslerud's acquaintances.

He didn't discover his artistic talents until recently, however. according to relatives. It wasn't until his young daughter asked for help on a school poster several years ago that he reportedly began considering painting as a hobby.

Born March 4. 1901, at Albert Lea, Minn., he married Selma Olness June 12, 1928, at Peterson. He owned and operated a barber shop at Lafayette, Minn., for three years before moving to Rushford

Surviving are his wife; a daughter, Yvonne. at home, and his mother, Mrs. Cora Haslerud, and his brother, Robert, both of Peterson.

The Rev. N. L. Otterstad will officiate at services at the Rushford Lutheran Church at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday following services at the home at 1:30 p.m. Burial will be at the Lutheran cemetery here.

George married Selma Caroline OLNESS, daughter of Andrew Olae OLNESS and Julia Knudsen BAKKEN, on 12 Jun 1928 in Peterson, Fillmore County, MN.¹ (Selma Caroline OLNESS was born on 23 Jul 1901 in Arendahl Township, Fillmore County, Minnesota and died on 27 Aug 1997 in Winona, Winona County, MN ⁴.) George Haslerud certainly slipped one over on his friends this time -- he was married last Tuesday, June 12, to Selma Olness of Rushford, and no one knew it until it was all over. The bride is well-known here, and in Rushford, where she has been telephone operator for several years. The ceremony was performed at 4 o'clock by Rev. H. M. Bakke, and the couple were attended by Miss Judith Olness, sister of the bride, and Arthur Halvorson. After the ceremony a wedding dinner was served at the home of the bride's mother, on North Prairie. The newly-weds are enjoying their honeymoon at Faribault and Albert Lea.

We unite with the people of this vicinity in wishing Mr. and Mrs. Haslerud many years of happiness and prosperity. Incidentally, it might be all right to add that the editor of this section had the honor of taking the first cigar from the box last Tuesday -- and it was a good cigar at that.

Miss Selma Caroline Olness became the bride of George B. Haslerud on Tuesday afternoon, June 12, 1928. Rev. H. N. Bakke performed the ceremony at four o'clock at his parsonage in Peterson, The bridesmaid was Miss Judith Olness, a sister of the bride and the group was attended by Arthur Halvorson of Peterson. The bride's gown was of shell pink satin and crepe. Her bouquet was of pink roses, and she wore a picture hat to match. Her bridesmaid was gowned in yellow crepe.

The wedding dinner was served at the home of the bride's mother, Mrs. Julia Olness, on North Prairie to the immediate family.

Mr. and Mrs. Haslerud left on a motor trip to Minneapolis and Albert Lea and will spend a few day at French Lake near Fairbault.

Mrs. Haslerud is one of the popular and esteemed young ladies of Rushford where she has held a position as operator in the telephone office for the past five years. Mr. Haslerud is a well known and respected young man of Peterson, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Peter G. Haslerud, and is engaged in the barber business.

Their many friends extend congratulations and best wishes for their future happiness and prosperity.
