Gilman T. CARLSON, 94, Manhattan, Kan., died Jan. 31, 1997 at St. Joseph's Senior Community Manhattan.

Born on the family farm In Livingston County near Pontiac, Ill., to John Eric and Clara RYERSON CARLSON, he attended Rural Common School and graduated from Pontiac High School.

After studying education at Illinois State Normal University and accounting at Walton School of Commerce, tic taught school in Livingston County from 1921-1925. He then joined International Harvester Company in Chicago where he practiced accounting until 1930. During that time he played saxophone for the Wayne King Orchestra at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago.

In 1931, Mr. Carlson returned to Livingston County where he farmed until 1943 before moving to Fulton County where he continued farming until his retirement in 1977. He was a deacon in the Rochester First Christian Church, a member of the IOOF, a founder of the Rochester Senior Citizen Center, a leader in the Fulton County Council on Aging and active in Indiana Soil Conservation plus numerous other state and local agricultural and civic organizations. In 1991, he moved to Manhattan, Kan., where he remained in retirement until death.

He married Edith M. LINNEMAN in 1929. She preceded him in death in 1956. He then married the former Hedvig ERLANDSON. She died in 1985.

He is survived by a daughter, Barbara CARLSON STEWART., Manhattan, Kan.; an adopted son, Jan CARLSON, Chicago, Ill.; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren, one sister Evelyn LINDROTH, Mountain Home, Ark. He was preceded in death also by two sons, John G. CARLSON and Richard L. CARLSON.

There will be a memorial service at the First Christian Church, Rochester, and graveside services at IOOF Cemetery in the spring. A date has not been set.
