• Obituary, 2013. ST. CHARLES \emdash George Edmund "Eddie" Fosse, a World War II veteran and longtime resident of St. Charles, died on Memorial Day, May 27, after a courageous battle with cancer.
He was born in Ottawa, on Sept. 25, 1924, the third of five children of George O. and Helen (Pillion) Fosse. His childhood was spent in Ottawa and Wedron, and he graduated from Serena High School in 1942, where he excelled in basketball.
Immediately following his graduation, he joined the U.S. Army at Fort Crowder, Mo., and was assigned to the Army Signal Corps. He served in Okinawa and Korea until his discharge in 1945.
On Nov. 18, 1950, he married the love of his life, Marilyn Jean (Joneson) Fosse, in Ottawa. They lived in Ottawa, Decatur, Moline and Rock Island before settling in St. Charles in 1957. During these years, they also started a family that grew to include sons, Kevin, Kenton and Kim, and daughter, Lisa.
George was an official court reporter for the state of Illinois for almost a half century, including 40 years at the Kane County Courthouse in Geneva, and he served as president of the Illinois Court Reporters Association for two terms.Following his retirement in 1997, he became a bailiff at the courthouse until retiring a second time in 2010 at the age of 86!
Not much of a hobbyist, George's greatest joy was spending time with his family, and he especially enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren participate in sports.
He was an avid fan of the Cubs, Bulls, Illinois basketball and, to the chagrin of his sons, Notre Dame football. He also was a Disabled American Veteran and a member of the American Legion. But most notably, George was a selfless man who spent the majority of his life caring for others.
He was a devoted husband, proud father and grandfather and compassionate friend whose kindness, quick wit, sharp memory and generosity will be missed by all who knew him.
George was preceded in death by his wife, Marilyn, in 2004; son, Kenton; his parents; brother, Joseph Wayne Fosse; sister, Marjorie (Fosse) Schroff; nephews, David LeBrun and David Ferracuti; and niece, Debra Ferracuti.
He is survived by his children, Kevin (Katie) Fosse, of Boulder, Colo., Kim (Cindy) Fosse, of Naperville, and Lisa Fosse, of St. Charles; granddaughters, Kendall and Kourtney, of Boulder; sisters, Eileen (Fosse) Hoxsey, of Serena, and Connie (Fosse) Barto, of Mission Viejo, Calif.; numerous nieces and nephews; his lifelong friend, LeRoy Muffler, of Serena; and his daughter's heartbroken pugs, Jazzy, Coconut and Cici.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, May 30, at Yurs Funeral Home, 405 E. Main St., St. Charles, the corner of routes 25 and 64. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, May 31, at Yurs Funeral Home. Burial will be in Oakwood Memorial Park, Ottawa.
Memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society.
The family wishes to thank the nurses and caregivers at Delnor Hospital and Pineview Care Center for their compassion, comfort and care during the past several months.
