Ruth Johnson, age 98, of Aurora, passed away June 29, 1998 at the Jennings Terrace Care Center, Aurora.
Having battled congestive heart failure for some time, she slipped from its grasp shortly before noon, Monday.
Just moments away from a surprise lunch time visit with her granddaughter, she was called home to dine instead with her family of loved ones gone on before.
She was born October 28, 1899 in West Union, IL, (near Marshall), the daughter of John Ambrose and Sophonia (Greek) Morecraft.
When she was six years old, her mother died in child birth, leaving Ruth with five brothers. Soon afterward, she was adopted by Theophilous and Louise Totel and she came to make her home with them in Ottawa, IL.
Her life seemed blighted with tragedy and loss as her adopted mother also died, when Ruth was twelve and just four years later her adopted father died.
Ruth herself nearly died when she was stricken with scarlet fever. The disease left her with a badly damaged heart but a spirit that was born to survive.
As a young woman, Ruth began searching for her lost brothers and, one by one, found them all.
On February 22, 1928, she was united in marriage to Arnold M. Johnson and they farmed near Kaneville for many years. Following Arnold's death in 1970, Ruth moved to Aurora where she made her own home for sixteen years until 1986 when she became a resident at Jennings Terrace, Aurora.
She was a member of Kaneville United Methodist Church, where she was also a member of the women's afternoon and evening auxiliary.
She was also a member of the Kaneville 59 and Holding Club.
She is survived by one daughter, Evelyn (Willie) Kohler of Marion, IL; one grandson, Michael (Lora) Kohler of Tulsa, OK; one great granddaughter, Shona (Robert) Orr of Tulsa, OK; one grandson-in-law, James (Antonette) Carlson, Sr. and their sons, James Carlson Jr. and Travis Carlson, both of Newark, IL.
She joins now her husband, Arnold Johnson; five brothers, Noah, Walter, Orville, Alfred and Russell Morecraft and one granddaughter, Kathy Carlson, and one grandson, Robert Kohler who preceded her in death.
Friends may call at Conley Funeral Home on Thursday, July 2, 1998 from 1:00 pm until 2:00 pm. Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 pm on Thursday, July 2, 1998. Interment will follow at Kaneville Cemetery.
Memorials in her name may be made to Kaneville United Methodist Church in care of P.O. Box A, Elburn, IL 60119.
