MABEL, Minn. (Special) -- A Rural Mabel bachelor committed suicide at his home Thursday night with a .22 automatic rifle.
He was Henry M. Vitse, 68, who lived alone in his farm home on Highway 43 about one-fourth mile south of the unincorporated village of Choice.
ALLAN Johnson of the area had purchased Vitse's farm with the provision Vitse continue living in the house Vitse was accustomed to seeing that Johnson's stock was watered. Johnson noted Friday afternoon that the stock hadn't had water so he went to Vitse's door, called and received no answer.
With two other neighbors, Cyrus Hanson and Warren Aygarn, he went into the house and found Vitse at 4 p.m. lying on his bed, a shot in his forehead and the gun lying beside him on the bed. The house wasn't locked.
Fillmore County Sheriff Carl Fann and Deputy Orvel Olsen, Mabel, investigated. Dr. J. E. Westrup, Lanesboro, county coroner, fixed death at about 8 or 9 p.m. Thursday.
VITSE WAS born Aug. 5, 1900, at Choice to Martin and Jane Johnson Vitse. He was a retired farmer and lived in this area all his life.
Survivors are two sisters, Mrs. Milo (Josephine) Omodth and Mrs. Mamie Peterson, both of Mabel. Three sisters and two brothers have died.
Service will be Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. at Jensen Funeral Home, Rushford, the Rev. Owen Gaasedelen officiating. Burial will be in the Choice Cemetery. There will be no visitation.
