• Obituary, 1999. Carolyn Dahl Jones, 80, Topeka, died Sunday, May 9, 1999, in Riverside, Calif., from pulmonary complications after suffering a heart attack April 1 while visiting a brother in California.
Mrs. Jones was a nurse and a teacher before retiring in 1982. She and her husband also operated a restaurant business in Kansas City, Mo., and later a tourist business in Tucson, Ariz. The couple moved to the Denison area in 1951 and to Topeka in 1953.
She was born Feb. 5, 1919, in Fillmore County, Minn., the daughter of Edward H. and Bertha Highum Dahl. She grew up in Pope County, Minn. She earned a nursing degree in 1941 from the Lutheran Deaconess Hospital, Chicago, and a bachelor's degree and a certificate in public health from the University of Minnesota School of Medicine in 1958. She earned a secondary teaching certificate from Washburn University in 1962. She received an NDEA Fellowship in History from the University of Kansas and earned a master's degree in 1968.
Mrs. Jones served as a nurse in San Diego and at the Winter General Veterans Hospital from 1954 to 1958. From 1958 to 1962, she was a nurse with the Topeka-Shawnee County Health Department.
Mrs. Jones started work for Washburn Rural High School as a teacher and part-time nurse, later teaching full-time. She taught social sciences and was the department head from 1979 to 1982.
Mrs. Jones was an ordained Deacon at First Presbyterian Church, where she was active for more than 40 years.
She was a member of the National Education Association, Kansas NEA, Kansas and Topeka Retired Teachers Associations and Kansas and National Teachers of the Year.
She was a member of the Kansas Historical Society and served on the board of trustees for the Shawnee County Historical Society.
She married Leland B. Jones on May 10, 1942, in Yuma, Ariz. He died in 1990.
Survivors include a daughter, Kristine Erb, Livingston, Texas; a son, Bruce Jones, Odessa, Mo.; a sister, Barbara Wright, Oxford, Ga.; two brothers, Warren Dahl, Carlos, Minn., and David Dahl, Corona, Calif.; three grandchildren and four stepgrandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Larkinburg Cemetery, Larkinburg. Mrs. Jones will lie in state today and Friday at Mercer Funeral Home, Holton, where the family will greet friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday. The family also will greet friends from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. Saturday at the church.
